* * *
MANIKARNIKA
Original Telugu : Prof.Raamaa chandramouli
Translated By : Mydavolu Satyanarayana
Manikarnika must be in an oblivion,
a fugue or some kind of amnesia…
sitting pretty on her throne of ashes
was watching keen the Ganga Aarti !
Nothing changed since epochs
…when woman was tortured and killed…
and lo when Sati was cut into pieces fifty two,
here at Varanasi…
her earrings became a pool of Sacred Force.
And at Kanykumari, the chopped two feet
of that aboriginal woman that eddied
pools of gore all around
had stirred the oceans and rivers
to inexplicable woe!
Someone had deserted the wailing Manikarnika
amidst the blazing pyres of the graveyard.
She, who grew wearing the time-attire
could visualize a naked world
and could read the nakedness of the world!
Yes…she beheld them all…
When someone flung his first earned coins
over the dusty tombs of God’s acre
there were more scrambing
for that squandered dough!
She realised that life was a silent shore
…a lone canoe…a never ending journey,
and sported a goad in hand
and a billion letters in heart!
Walking barefooted through
the narrow lanes of Varanasi,
passing through the ‘Mukti Bhavan’,
the mystic shrine that grants one
his death as and when desired…
her conscience transcended
the mortal ends of burning in pyres
to realise how to kindle the divine inner fire !
Varanasi…yes revealed to her
the secrets of birth and death;
and taught her the ways to rob and get robbed.
The burning wood in pyres
revealed to her…where begins the birth
and where it ends as death !
Later when she learned
how to make the silence to speak
she realised that life is a subtle strategy,
that victory and loss
are like dribbling away water
through the gaps between the fingers
and that a horse can only be reined
by an expert horseman
and through the thin screens of elegiac tunes
she learnt how to peer at the other bays.
The more she scaled the heights,
she found the zenniths
becoming deeper and deeper dales
and searched for some parallels
to the equatorial lines.
When she could discern
between the love eternal
and love transient…
she realised that there’s in fact
no love-pure and perfect at all
and all that’s seen is nothing
but desire and infatuation!
Ah…Manikarnika, an orphan became
a Divine soul and an eternal being
with the entire world now in her choking grasp.
Staring at the sky
in the light of the burning pyres
she threw her diamond earrings
into the gushing streams of pious Ganges.

A passing saint singing ecstatic
some classic hymn:
‘O fly away my little bird…’
is floating in the duelty
of revelry and sobriety…
and Pious Ganga, like an everlasting life
is flowing and flowing, shimmering
with silent chastity !
