Torture
Translated by Indira Babbellapati

She’d been serving as a war-prisoner for
seven long years, and understood that
deserts, thick forests lay hidden within one’s hearts.
She’d been pleading with the officials
to grant her permission, just for once,
to see her only son, aged seven,
and finally permitted.

Like the earth getting drenched in a drizzle,
she walked to the callers’ room.
Clad in her burqa from head to toe,
she looked an angel of sorrow.

‘Remove it!’ shouted the sentry,
she unveiled her face,
doubtfully, if she rightly decoded the instructions,
she took a step ahead.

His eyes scanned her body beneath the robes,
‘More!’ he ordered.
Looking at her own body in disgust,
she removed another and yet another,
‘More, more, security is our top most priority!’
She removed her burqa too, standing
helplessly in near nakedness.
The gruff hungry words of the sentry were seeped
in sadistic glee, and throbbing anticipation.
In that semi-nakedness, as if prompted, she jumped
towards the sentry like a charged lioness.
She spat violently on his face, gathered her clothes, the
burqa and a handful of tears.
She turned back to run to her ‘chamber.’

At that very moment, a realization dawned upon her:
‘Sometimes not living is better than living.’
