The Arable Land

Translated by U. Atreya Sarma

Teaching ‘Reverse Engineering,’
he explained,
“We can make the poisonous substance of plastic
from out of dirt, but
we can’t recycle it back into dirt,
and added,
“Nobody knows how the man has learnt the mystic art
of turning into a beast without having to change his form,
and he is too helpless to change back into man.

Then, the pupil and the teacher
spotted a butterfly, hovering about the window for some time.
The butterfly, just transformed from the caterpillar,
needed a flowering plant or the branch of a tree,
and was searching for it.
Like the old age that yearns to reclaim its childhood,
The desire shattering into different hues,
the experiences are breaking down into layers of shadows.
The teacher explained to the pupils
how the brooks join to form a river,
how a river divides into distributaries
to flow as channels into the fields.
“The butterflies and the birds
Wing about and float around during the entire day.
But where do they rest in the night?”
It suddenly struck them.

It was then that the “tree” hovered into their mind.
Sacrificing its entire body throughout its life
It presents us shade, leaves, fruit and timber.
Taking in the discharged polluted air
It gives out oxygen to the entire living kingdom.
Such a donor is a tree.
Like a fish taking to water as soon as born
so does the tree slide into meditation as soon as born
to illumine the life forms and the creation.

The professor who lectured on “Reverse Engineering”
Threw away everything that evening
and bought an earthenware
a jar for water, a couple of pots and a plate for cooking,
two acres of arable land for organic crops.
Later, that evening,
he reclined in an easy chair
and kept gazing at the serene sky
after a gap of many years.
